Custom Tuners: Several brands of tuners available for custom order instruments and can have various finishes and button styles. The most commonly used tuners are the ‘M6’ style machines, which feature a sealed gear casing. I feel that the best value for tuning machines, are Schaller, Grover and Gotoh ‘M6’ style tuners. Gotoh offers an upgraded version of these, which feature a more elegant design and overall better fit and finish and also have a high 18:1 gear ratio for smooth tuning. Schaller, Gotoh and Grover also ‘mini’ versions of the ‘M6’ style tuners that are a great choice for small body guitars because of reduced weight on the head. “Open back” tuners are a great choice for ‘vintage’ style instruments again, because they are lighter. If you desire tuning machines that aren’t list here, let me know and I’ll do my best to obtain them.
There are fewer alternatives available for ‘slothead’ guitars tuners. I feel that Grover Sta-tite slothead tuners are the best value available. Waverly tuners are a great ‘high end’ option. If your pockets are deep, Waverly slothead and open-back tuners are a great choice for any guitar but especially for vintage style instruments. Waverly offers the greatest number of options for color and button choices of any other manufacturer that I know of. All of the tuners mentioned above come chrome and gold, and many offer black and nickel finishes. Many tuners manufacturers offer black plastic or ebony buttons in addition to chrome and gold, and custom replacement buttons can be special ordered for most of the ‘M6’ style tuning machines.
Custom Finish: The finish product that I use is Grafted Coating’s KTM-9. This is a water-based ‘lacquer like’ and is used by many independent luthiers because it is a much safer, environmentally friendly product than traditional nitrocellulose lacquer. Aged, color tinted and sunburst finishes are available at extra cost.
Cutaway: Cutaway is an option on all models that I build. Cutaway styles include ‘Florentine’ (or pointy style) and the more common rounded ‘Venetian’ style.
Rosette: The ‘standard’ options for soundhole rings (at no extra cost) includes; a ‘vintage’ style herringbone ring (fine or bold pattern) with alternating black and white purfling strips; or a ring made from exotic or highly figured wood or burl w/purfling strips. The other option (at additional cost) is abalone (or other shell) ring with alternating contrasting purfling strips.
